SPA AND HOT TUB FILTER CLEANING TIPS

Filter Cartridge life and its effectiveness depends on proper maintenance. A dirty filter has the potential to increase the load on the water pump motor and reduces the effectiveness of the water heater.

During use, filter media begins to lose its filtration ability because it becomes clogged with particles and other contaminants. This causes the water pump to work harder in order to push the water through the filter and can result in damage to the pump and motor and/or rupture the filter. A ruptured filter allows particles and contaminants to freely circulate throughout the water and deposit on anything with which they come into contact.

The best indication of a clogged or ruptured filter cartridge is an increase in water pressure or no pressure within the cartridge's housing canister or a visible decrease in the systems water flow rate.

Filter cartridge's should be rinsed and cleaned at least once every month or more often if necessary. The filter cartridge should be cleansed of coarse dirt and debris by pressure washing inside and out with a garden hose. Apply the water stream at a 45 degree angle and spray between each filter pleat to make sure all foreign matter is dislodged.

Fine particles of dirt are more easily removed from the filter pleats by a gentle brushing after the cartridge has been allowed to dry. Caution, do not scrub the pleated surface areas of the filter or apply a stream of compressed air to the filter surface to remove fine particles, because doing so can damage the filter media.

Algae, suntan oil, and body oils can form a coating on the filter, which may not be thoroughly removed by hosing. If these contaminates are left on the filter media the media's efficiency is reduced and will become clogged more rapidly. Therefore, it is a good practice to remove these contaminates from the filter cartridge before replacing it.

We recommend soaking the cartridge in a solution of Penetrating Spa Cleanser or Bio-Wash cleaner (available from this web site) to remove algae, oils, and other gunk from the filter media. Follow the manufactures' directions for proper use. Allow one hour for soaking and then hose the cartridge thoroughly before re-installing in the filter housing.

TIPS:
  • We recommend that filters be replaced yearly.
  • Use the rotation method of filter maintenance: while your dirty filter is soaking in a cleaning solution, replace it with a clean dry spare.
  • Never use a power washer to clean filter cartridges, the high pressure water will damage the filter media.
  • Never use household bleach to clean filters. Although bleach may seem to do an adequate job of cleaning, it degrades and weakens the fibers in most filter media, thereby decreasing the useful life of the filter.
